Abstract

A Public accountant is one of the most expensive professions. This profession provides more opportunities to get a variety of jobs, because public accountants can be assigned in company with many different characteristics and conditions. The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of motivation and interest to career selection as a public accountant of accounting students at Catholic University in Surabaya. The background of this study is because the slow growth of Public Accountant profession in Indonesia compared to other countries in ASEAN. The sample that used in this study are accounting students who has completed the 1st and 2nd audit class with total of 130 respondents which consist of students from Widya Mandala University and Darma Cendika Catholic University. This study is using quantitative descriptive method, and the data collection instruments are questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed to 130 respondents and returned only 90, and then data from questionnaires will be analyzed using descriptive statistical method, validity test, reliability test, classic assumption test, and hypothesis test. The result of this study shows that motivation and interest are influencing the career selection as a public accountant. Based from the coefficient of determination number, is known that motivation and interest affecting only 26.3% towards accounting student career selection as a public accountant, while the 73.7% is influenced by other variables which is not researched through this study.
