Abstract

The purpose of the present research was to examine the effects of loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR), operating efficiency ratio (OER), and non-performing loan (NPL) on rural banks’ profitability in Sidoarjo Regency. The present study was quantitative research, with samples of 54 BPR (bank perkreditan rakyat or rural bank) in the period of 2016. Multiple Regression Analysis is applied to verify this research framework. Results showed that 1) OER had a significant negative effect on ROA; 2) LDR had a significant negative effect on ROA; and 3) NPL had no significant negative effect on ROA. The coefficient of LDR is negative, indicating that any increase in LDR will decrease the ROA value. LDR has a negative effect on ROA due to cost inefficiency or a high NPL The third hypothesis is rejected since the loan risks generated by BPR are quite stable, not to disrupt the value of the company’s profitability. Also, BPR obtains additional significant revenues from penalties on late repayments. The present study may contribute to other researchers and also banking policy makers with regard to developing strategies useful for both communities enjoying credit facilities and the stakeholders of BPRs.
